Thierry Henry surprised by Arsenal man’s lack of action

Thierry Henry has told Sky Sports he finds it “weird” that Granit Xhaka has not started more games for Arsenal this season.

The Swiss midfielder joined Arsenal in a £35 million move from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer, but he has only started nine of the Gunners‘ 20 games across all competitions so far this season.

Francis Coquelin seems to be manager Arsene Wenger’s first-choice defensive midfielder at the moment and it remains to be seen when the 24-year-old will be given an extended run in the first team.

His price-tag certainly suggested that he would be an automatic starter, and Henry, Arsenal’s record goalscorer, admits it is strange to him that it hasn’t worked out that way just yet.

“It’s a weird one. Arsenal bought him, so I was expecting him to start – maybe not every single game at the beginning because he has to adapt to the league – but I think that he was going to be ‘the guy’ in midfield,” Henry told Sky Sports.

Whether he is playing or not, Arsenal fans have the peace of mind in knowing that they have another fine option in defensive midfield.

Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini were Coquelin’s only real competition over the past three years, so it is welcoming to know that a player of Xhaka’s calibre is waiting in the wings if the Frenchman suffers an injury of some description.

Xhaka could start tonight as Arsenal host Southampton in the quarter-finals of the League Cup.
