Rijeka vs Red Bull Salzburg Predictions, Betting Tips

Rijeka vs Salzburg predictions for Wednesday’s Champions League clash in Croatia. Rijeka look to utilise the home advantage in their Champions League clash with Red Bull Salzburg. Read on for all our free predictions and betting tips.

Rijeka took advantage of Dinamo Zagreb’s collapse last season and went on to claim their first ever Croatian league title, putting them back into the Champions League for the first time since the turn of the millennium. That is their only previous appearance in the competition, and with them losing that tie 6-1 in the 2nd qualifying round, things are looking much better this time round.

They managed to hold Red Bull Salzburg to a 1-1 draw away from home last week, putting the ball firmly in their court as they welcome the Austrian champions to Croatia. With an away goal to their advantage and the home crowd behind them they will feel fairly confident of progressing in the competition.

So far Rijeka’s season as a whole is going well. They have won their opening three league matches as they defend their title, they hammered The New Saints 7-1 in their previous Champions League qualifier, and now they’re in a great position to make it to the playoff round.

Red Bull Salzburg did make short work of Hibernians in their last qualifying tie with a 6-0 aggregate win, but they dropped points against LASK Linz at the weekend and now face a daunting trip to Croatia as they look to remain in the Champions League.

The visitors do have a much longer history in this competition than Rijeka, but it’s not been overly successful. Red Bull Salzburg have never made it to the group stages, regularly getting knocked out in the playoffs and ending up in the Europa League group stages. They had a fantastic season in the 2013/14 campaign, but their squad was gutted the following summer and since then they haven’t made it out of the groups.

Away from home they have won three, drawn three, and lost seven of their last 13 Champions League matches, and they’re facing a Rijeka side who have won six of their last nine home European games. Given how last week went, I think Rijeka have enough about them to get the win, and odds of 5/4 for that outcome look good value. We’re going for that along with a 2-1 correct score predictions at 17/2.
