According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United are interested in signing Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph during the January transfer window – and have contacted Premier League clubs about potential loan deals.
The Magpies suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Monday evening, and the defeat allowed Brighton to overtake them at the top of the Championship table.
With Jonjo Shelvey suspended, Newcastle lacked real top quality in midfield, with Jack Colback unable to fill Shelvey’s boots – and it seems that manager Rafael Benitez wants to add new signings in January.
The Chronicle report that Newcastle are eyeing up an ambitious January move for Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph, given that he’s down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium.
Delph, 27, starred with Aston Villa during the 2014-15 season, and his performances earned him a move to Manchester City in the summer of 2015 – but that surprise move hasn’t paid off for Delph.
After making just eight Premier League starts last season, Delph has struggled with injuries again this term, and has played just 28 minutes of Premier League action this term, with his last appearance in any competition coming at the end of August.
Whilst Newcastle will be hoping to seal an ambitious loan deal for nine-cap England international Delph, it’s added that Newcastle have lodged a number of enquiries to take Premier League players on loan, with Benitez hoping to bring in real quality in January to help Newcastle get over the line and win promotion back to the Premier League.
