Lionel Messi says it was ‘impossible’ for Man United to beat Barcelona in 2009 Champions League final

Lionel Messi believes that it was “impossible” for Manchester United to have beaten his Barcelona side in the 2009 Champions League final.

The Catalans sealed their third European Cup in Rome thanks to a 2-0 win at the Stadio Olymicio, as they swept aside Sir Alex Ferguson’s side on their way to an historic treble.

The 2008-09 vintage under Pep Guardiola have gone down as one of the greatest club sides of all time and Messi says they played the perfect match in Rome.

“There are several games when the team played in such a way that it was almost impossible for the opponents to do any damage to us,” he told the Sun .

“Both were inexplicable feelings but you live them in a different way,” he continues.

“In any massive game when you score a goal, the joy of the people, your people, the supporters, and particularly our own fans, you can only enjoy those moments right there and then — and not beyond.”

Guardiola’s men defeated the Premier League side 3-1 on English soil, handing the Catalans their third European title in six years.
