England should book their place at the 2018 World Cup on Thursday. Victory would ensure they are in Russia while they would also qualify with a draw should Scotland and Slovakia share the points in Glasgow. While there are still major doubts about England’s ability to compete with the best sides in the world, they are the class act in this group and should have no problem securing the win here.
It’s unlikely to be by a big margin though. Slovenia are a functional side, that will almost certainly come with a very defensive mindset. A point would most likely keep them in with a shout of qualifying going into the final match-day and they are unlikely to take any major risks to chase a shock win. 9 of their last 10 matches have produced under 2.5 goals so they are not normally a team involved in thrilling contests.
Their main strength is very much at the back and they’ve only conceded 3 goals in those last 10 internationals so England may have to be patient in this one. A lack of creativity has been an issue for England but fortunately for Gareth Southgate’s men they have one of the form strikers in world football.
Right now Harry Kane only seems to need one chance to find the net with an astonishing 13 goals in 8 appearances for club and country in September. You can back Kane to score anytime at 8/11 here and that’s surely worth a bet given the form he is in.
England’s defence has been exposed by stronger teams in recent matches but they should have a quiet evening here with Slovenia offering precious little in attack. It’s likely to be the sort of evening where England will need to press and probe but should eventually find the breakthrough as they look to seal World Cup qualification. Their last three qualifiers have produced just two 1st Half goals but nine after the interval and backing 2nd Half – Half With Most Goals at 21/20 could offer value.
In addition going for England to Win & Under 2.5 Goals at 11/5 looks good, particularly given Slovenia’s strong tendency for low-scoring games.
HEAD TO HEAD
England drew 0-0 in Slovenia earlier in this group. They’d won the previous 4 meetings including two victories during qualifying for Euro 2016 and a 1-0 win at the 2010 World Cup under Fabio Capello.
